The Santa Susana Mountains rise along Simi Valley's northern and western boundaries, forming a distinctive backdrop to the city. Rocky Peak Park, operated within the mountains by the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority, covers 4,800 acres of ridgelines and canyons between Chatsworth and Simi Valley. The park is accessible from multiple trailheads on the Simi Valley side, including major trails off Flanagan Street and Rocky Peak Overpass along the 118 Freeway, making the high country a few minutes' drive from residential neighborhoods.

Three primary trails offer different experiences: Rocky Peak Trail is a 5-mile route of moderate difficulty with panoramic views of the valley floor and surrounding ridges; Chumash Trail is a 3-mile steady climb that rewards hikers with wildflowers in spring and far views from the high country; Hummingbird Trail is an easier walk featuring seasonal water cascades after winter rains. The park welcomes biking, horseback riding, dog walking and nature photography, drawing residents year-round for day-use recreation.

When a family lives a few minutes from 4,800 acres of open space and trail systems, recreation is not a distant dream—it is part of the weekly rhythm. The hikers, riders and outdoor enthusiasts who make those mountains part of their life are also the ones who know that an unexpected absence would reshape everything.
